Ask anyone what it takes to keep muscles strong as you get older, and you will hear the same two answers. Eat enough protein. Do some strength training. Both are absolutely true.
But there is a third piece that often gets left out of the conversation entirely: vitamin D.
Researchers have been studying the connection between vitamin D and muscle health for years. And the same finding keeps showing up. People with low vitamin D levels are more likely to have reduced muscle strength. They are also more likely to fall, and that risk goes up as we get older.
Does that mean low vitamin D directly causes muscle weakness? Not necessarily. The science is a little more nuanced than that. But the relationship between the two is strong enough that experts now consider vitamin D an important part of healthy aging.
For our generation, that is worth paying attention to. Staying strong is about a lot more than the gym. It is about staying steady on your feet, staying independent, and staying active in the life you have built.
Vitamin D has been in the shadows of the nutrition conversation for too long. Protein and exercise deserve their spotlight. But this is one nutrient worth making sure you are not missing.
Talk to your doctor about your vitamin D levels if you have not already. It is a simple thing to check, and knowing where you stand is always a good place to start.
