You keep a clean house. You love your pet. Those two things can quietly come into conflict in ways most of us never think about.
Every year, the ASPCA Poison Control Center fields thousands of calls about household products, including common cleaning supplies that have harmed dogs and cats. The risk is real, and it lives right under your sink.
Dogs and cats explore the world by chewing, licking, and sniffing things they should not. That curiosity is part of what we love about them. It is also what puts them at risk.
Dryer Sheets and Fabric Softeners
Dryer sheets and fabric softeners contain what are called cationic detergents: cleaning and softening agents that can cause serious chemical burns to the mouth, esophagus, and other tissues. Cats appear especially sensitive and may develop severe signs even after a small exposure.
Dryer sheets carry an added risk: if swallowed, they can also cause a blockage in the digestive tract.
Liquid potpourri and some diffuser liquids may contain these same ingredients as well, along with fragrances, alcohol, or essential oils.
Signs to watch for include drooling, vomiting, mouth irritation or ulceration, trouble swallowing, weakness, uncoordinated walking, and breathing difficulties. Severe cases may affect blood pressure, body temperature, or neurological function. If vomiting occurs, aspiration pneumonia is an additional concern.
Bleach, Drain Cleaners, and Other Strong Chemicals
Bleach, toilet bowl cleaners, drain cleaners, rust removers, some pool chemicals, and the contents of alkaline batteries all fall into a category of corrosive substances, either strong alkalis or strong acids that can cause extensive tissue damage.
Even small exposures to diluted versions may cause mild stomach upset. More concentrated products can seriously injure the mouth, throat, esophagus, and stomach. Chlorine pool tablets can also release fumes that damage the respiratory tract.
Here is something worth knowing about alkalis specifically: they can penetrate tissues deeply and sometimes cause no immediate pain. That means injury can progress before you even realize something is wrong. Acids, on the other hand, typically cause rapid irritation and pain right away, but can still result in significant burns and ulceration.
Common signs of exposure to either type include excessive drooling, vomiting, mouth ulceration, difficulty swallowing, loss of appetite, and lethargy. Severe cases may lead to breathing trouble, cardiovascular complications, or shock.
Simple Steps That Make a Real Difference
Most of these exposures are preventable. The ASPCA recommends storing cleaning products, laundry supplies, batteries, pool chemicals, and diffuser liquids in secure cabinets your pet cannot get into.
A few other habits that help:
- Clean up spills right away
- Never leave hazardous products unattended where a curious pet could reach them
- Follow product directions, and let treated surfaces dry completely before your pet has access
- Make sure rooms are well ventilated when using chemicals, and keep pets away from treated areas until the air clears
If Something Does Happen
If you think your pet has chewed, licked, or swallowed a corrosive product, get to a vet right away, even if your pet looks fine. The ASPCA notes that signs can be delayed, so do not wait to see how things develop.
One important note: do not try to make your pet vomit unless a veterinarian specifically tells you to. With corrosive injuries, vomiting can cause additional damage to already irritated tissues.
