6 Habits That Sharpen Your Memory After 60

6 Habits That Sharpen Your Memory After 60

There is no shortage of health advice once you pass 60. Watch your blood pressure. Protect your bones. All of that matters. But there is another piece of the puzzle that gets less attention: keeping your mind sharp.

Not just surviving, actually thinking clearly, remembering well, and staying mentally on your game. That is worth caring about, too.

Now there is solid new research to back that up.

What the Study Found

Dr. Lucia Crivelli and a team of researchers ran a two-year randomized controlled trial with 1,065 adults aged 60 to 77. Participants came from 11 countries in the Americas, making it the first large-scale brain health prevention trial of its kind.

The result? A structured lifestyle program improved overall memory and thinking skills by about 55 percent more per year than standard health advice alone. That is a meaningful difference.

The biggest gains showed up in memory, processing speed, executive function, and planning.

What the Program Actually Included

This was not a vague recommendation to “stay active and eat well.” It was a specific, structured routine. Here is what participants did:

  • Supervised exercise four days a week
  • Personalized nutrition counseling based on the MIND diet, short for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay, adapted to local foods and budgets
  • Dance sessions including salsa and tango as part of the exercise program
  • Computer-based cognitive training
  • Regular monitoring of blood pressure, weight, and blood sugar
  • Small-group meetings to encourage social connection

It Worked for Nearly Everyone

Here is what stands out most. The benefits were similar regardless of age, education level, ethnicity, or genetic risk for Alzheimer’s disease.

In other words, this was not just for one type of person. It worked broadly, across a very diverse group of older adults.

A Good Reminder

You do not have to join a clinical trial to take any of this seriously. The habits in this program, such as regular movement, eating well, staying socially connected, and giving your brain a workout, are all things you can build into your days right now.

Staying sharp is not about being perfect. It is about showing up for your brain the same way you show up for the rest of your health.
