
You’ve probably peeked through the oven door a thousand times: checking on a roast, watching cookies brown, waiting for a casserole to bubble. And somewhere in all that watching, you’ve almost certainly noticed them: a band of tiny black dots around the edge of the glass.
Most of us never gave them a second thought. But those little dots are doing real work every time you cook.
What Are They Called?
They’re called frits, or more specifically, a ceramic frit pattern. So what is it? “Frit” is simply the general term for glass powder.
According to a spokesperson for appliance manufacturer Bosch, modern oven-door frits are made from ceramic ink that contains a glass flux, black pigments, and organic binders. That mixture gets screen-printed onto the glass before it’s tempered, permanently fusing the pattern into the surface. You can see the dots from the outside, but you can’t touch them; they’re on the inner surface of the outer glass pane.
The pattern typically forms a solid black border around the edges, then gradually fades into smaller, more widely spaced dots toward the center of the window.
Why Does the Oven Glass Need Them?
Here’s the problem with oven glass: one side faces intense heat while the other stays relatively cool. That gap in temperature puts the glass under real stress. Anytime material is subjected to a large temperature difference, it experiences high stress because the hot part expands while the cool part remains fixed.
The frits smooth that out. The purpose of these black dots is to basically reduce this temperature variation. Frits also help with glass durability by allowing the door material to heat and cool more uniformly. As a result, it prevents thermal shock.
According to Bosch, the ceramic frit pattern also helps distribute radiant heat more evenly across the outer glass panel. That reduces hot spots and helps keep the exterior door surface within consumer-safety temperature limits, so it doesn’t get dangerously hot to the touch.
Why That Specific Dot Pattern?
It’s not random. The solid border appears where heat management matters most, right where the glass meets the metal door frame. From there, the dots shrink and spread out gradually.
The color black is known for absorbing radiation, heat and light. It absorbs heat and radiates it back into the oven’s interior. But making the entire window black would defeat the whole purpose. If the entire window were black, you couldn’t see your food at all.
According to Bosch, that gradual dot gradient acts as a thermal bridge, creating a softer transition between the coated edge and the clear center. Without it, the sharp difference in heating between coated and uncoated glass could create additional stress.
The frits also have a practical cosmetic job: they hide the adhesives, seals, screws, and brackets that hold the door together. Bosch notes they also reduce the “rainbow effect”, an optical distortion that can appear when light passes through multiple treated layers of glass.
Do They Affect How Your Food Cooks?
Not at all. The frits manage heat in the door itself, but they have no effect on how heat circulates inside the oven or how your food turns out.
Have Ovens Always Had These Dots?
No. Earlier ovens used simple clear glass with no frit pattern. The technology itself goes back much further; manufacturers first used ceramic frit coatings on car windshields in the mid-20th century for similar reasons: durability, protecting adhesives, and giving window edges a finished look.
As oven makers introduced larger viewing windows and more energy-efficient designs in the 1970s, they adapted the same technology for kitchen appliances. In 1975, Shatterproof Glass Corporation received a patent for an oven door that incorporated ceramic frit coatings on the outer glass panel. Today, the pattern is standard on many electric and gas ovens.
What If Your Oven Doesn’t Have Them?
That’s fine. Some manufacturers use other approaches instead. Ovens without visible frits may rely on multi-pane glass, low-emissivity coatings, or other insulation materials. And if you have an older oven, it may simply predate the widespread use of frit patterns.
How Do You Clean Them?
The good news: you don’t need to do anything special. According to Bosch, the frit pattern is permanently fused into the glass during manufacturing, so routine cleaning won’t wear it away. On most modern ovens, the printed side faces inward, meaning you’re cleaning the smooth outer surface anyway.
If you notice the black coating starting to peel, it’s usually a cosmetic issue. But if the peeling is significant, it could point to damage to the oven’s enamel coating. In that case, check for chips or cracks and consult your manufacturer’s recommendations. Significant damage typically means replacing the glass panel.
So the next time you’re watching dinner through the oven window, you’ll know those little dots aren’t just there to look busy. They’re working just as hard as you are.
