Hiking With Your Grandkids: How to Keep Up

Picture it. Your granddaughter is already ten feet ahead on the trail, looking back over her shoulder with a grin. She wants you to race her to the top.

Part of you wants to say yes. And here is the thing: with a little planning, you can. The goal is to be the grandparent who is still out there years from now, not the one waving from the parking lot.

The smartest way to start is also the simplest. Choose short, well-marked, gently graded trails. Then add distance or incline gradually: over weeks, not days. Your body responds better to that kind of patience than to a sudden push.

And when a busy week gets in the way, do not let perfect be the enemy of good. A short walk you actually take beats a long hike you keep putting off. Some activity is always better than none.

Those two ideas — start gentle and stay consistent — are the foundation. Build on them slowly and you get to keep showing up for the moments that matter most. Patience is the key, just like the other important things in life.

The trail will still be there next weekend. So will your granddaughter, right at the front of the pack, waiting for you to catch up.
